We’re delighted to launch Field-a-Team: Tokyo, TrackAthletes' fan engagement competition, which will run alongside the Tokyo 2025 World Championships.
Participants (called players) select the three athletes who they think will win medals in select events. Unlike traditional prediction competitions, participants only have to predict 14 podiums in Field-a-Team: Tokyo, making it less daunting for those new to the sport or to prediction competitions.
Unlike traditional fantasy competitions, there are no restrictions on the total ‘value’ of athletes you can select.
We’ve added personal bests, season’s bests and world rankings for each athlete, making it easier to give educated guesses, but players should beware. Some World Champions have no world ranking, while some top-ranked athletes have been injured all season.
And we’ve purposely chosen some of the sport’s most difficult-to-predict events. That said, even if an athlete doesn’t win a medal, but finishes in the top 8, players will still gain points.
The competition is running across both the Irish and Australian TrackAthletes sites, and participants from anywhere in the world can take part.
The winner will be the player whose team has accumulated the most points. There will be no prizes, but the winner will forever have the honour of being the first TrackAthletes Field-a-Team winner.
Getting started
To take part in Field-a-Team: Tokyo, simply predict the top three finishers in fourteen events (men’s and women’s 100m, 1500m, marathon, sprint hurdles, multi events, shot put and long jump).
Use your TrackAthletes account to enter your team. This allows you to change your team, track your progress and view your final result. Accounts are free to set up, and the same account will give you access to the main TrackAthletes site. If you already have an account, you do not need to sign up for a new one.
Scoring
The following scoring system will be applied:
Imagine, for example, someone chooses Eluid Kipchoge to win the men’s marathon; Kenenisa Bekele to win silver and Haile Gebreselassie to win bronze, and (time travel aside) Kipchoge wins, Bekele finishes third and Gebreselassie finishes fifth, that player would score 14 points for the event (1 + 3 + 5 for Kipchoge; 1 + 3 for Bekele and 1 for Gebreselassie).
Selecting and changing your team
You will be presented with a list of entries for each of the events from which you can choose. We will attempt to remove withdrawn athletes and add announced replacements up to the closing date, and changes in the ‘live updates’ section of the Field-a-Team dashboard.
However, it is the player’s responsibility to ensure that their selected athletes are competing.
You can make unlimited changes to your team, right up until the final deadline. Replacements will not be possible after the final deadline, even if athletes subsequently withdraw before the start of their event. Late withdrawals are part of the fun.
Leaderboard and prizes
Every effort will be made to score the events and update the leaderboard daily (or as soon as possible afterwards). The leaderboard will be displayed on the Fantasy dashboard.
As your athletes are knocked out of the competition (e.g. if they don’t qualify for semi-final or final) they will turn dark on your team dashboard. You will be able to see at a glance how many athletes have earned you points and how many are still in play.
At the end of Tokyo 2025, the player whose ‘team’ has amassed the most points will be declared the winner.
In the event of a tie, the winner will be decided based on the player who has correctly selected the most gold medallists. If players still can't be separated, we'll move to silver medallists, and then, if needed, to bronze.
Entry into this contest is free.
Entry Deadline
The deadline for entries to be submitted is the moment the men’s 35km walk is scheduled to start in Tokyo! This is midnight (British Summer Time; GMT+1) on Friday 12 September 2025, 00:00 in Ireland, or 08:00 on Saturday 13 September in Australian Eastern Standard Time. Please check how your own time zone differs from British Summer Time to ensure you meet the entry deadline!
