Time for Field-a-Team: Lagoa, the cross country edition

The Lagoa edition of Field-a-Team, TrackAthletes’ fan engagement competition, is now open and will run alongside the 2025 European Cross Country Championships.

Participants (called players) select the three athletes who they think will win them the post points across each of the six individual races, and will select three teams in the mixed relay.

Relay teams will score points if they finish in the top 5, and individuals will score points if they finish in the top 20, making it more like a fantasy competition than a prediction competition. Unlike traditional fantasy competitions, there are no restrictions on the total ‘value’ of athletes you can select.

We’ve added previous accomplishments for relevant athletes, making it easier to give educated guesses. But a solid, reliable athlete will earn players more points for finishing 19th or 20th than a potential medal winner who fails to finish.

Participants from anywhere in the world can take part. The winner will be the player whose team has accumulated the most points. There will be no prizes, except for the honour of being a TrackAthletes Field-a-Team winner!

More than 200 players signed up for Field-a-Team: Tokyo, which ran alongside the 2025 World Championships. The TrackAthletes team hope to at least equal that number, and have added a Leagues feature – where players can play alongside their friends, family or clubmates – to encourage more people to become invested in the European Cross Country Championships.

Players have until 8:30am on Sunday 14th December to enter and update their team. The championships will get underway an hour later with the U20 women’s race, and will conclude with the Senior Men at 12:41pm. The event itself will be shown live on Eurovision Sport.

Getting started

To take part in Field-a-Team: Lagoa, simply three athletes in each of the six individual races, and three teams in the mixed relay.

Use your TrackAthletes account to enter your team. This allows you to change your team, track your progress and view your final result. Accounts are free to set up, and the same account will give you access to the main TrackAthletes site. If you already have an account, you do not need to sign up for a new one


Scoring

The following scoring system will be applied:

  • Each individual athlete you select will earn you points if they finish anywhere in the top 20. The higher they finish, the more points they earn.
  • Athletes who win their race will be awarded 25 points, silver medallists 22 points, 19 points for bronze, then 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 for 4th to 20th place respectively.
  • Relay teams will earn points if they finish in the top 5. The scoring is 15 points for 1st, 11 for 2nd, 8 for 3rd, 5 for 4th, and 3 for 5th.
  • Points scored in the senior races (including the relay) will be doubled before being added to a player’s total.

Imagine, for example, someone selects Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Yann Schrub and Serhiy Lebid* for the senior men, and they finished 1st, 5th and 10th respectively, then they earn 104 points [(25+16+11) x 2] for that player.

Selecting and changing your team

You will be presented with a list of entries for each of the events from which you can choose. We will attempt to remove withdrawn athletes and add announced replacements up to the closing date, and changes in the ‘live updates’ section of the Field-a-Team dashboard.

However, it is the player’s responsibility to ensure that their selected athletes are competing.

Players can make unlimited changes to their team, right up until the final deadline.


Leaderboard and prizes

Every effort will be made to score the events and update the leaderboard as soon as possible after each race. The leaderboard will be displayed on the Fantasy dashboard. The player whose ‘team’ has amassed the most points will be declared the winner.

In the event of a tie, the winner will be decided based on the player who has correctly selected the most gold medallists. If players still can't be separated, we'll move to silver medallists, and then, if needed, to bronze.
