There have been Irish representatives in all 17 seasons of the Diamond League to date. Thirty-five Irish athletes have competed in Diamond events since the League started in 2020.
Of those, Ciara Mageean is the most prolific, with 22 appearances between 2016 and 2024. Her 1500m win at the 2022 meeting in Brussels was the first Diamond League win by an Irish athlete, and she came close to winning a Diamond League trophy when she was second in the final in Zurich over the same distance that season.
Sarah Healy has 21 appearances to date, and could draw level with Mageean this week. At the time of writing, she is on the 1500m startlist for the Silesia meeting on Sunday. A good performance there could see the UCD AC athlete qualify for a third Diamond League final appearance, and would improve her chances of qualifying for the World Athletics Ultimate Championships next month.
The Diamond League was launched in 2010 to replace the IAAF Golden League. The Golden League was itself an extension of the Golden Four, a smaller, European-based competition in which Sonia O’Sullivan won a share of the 20kg gold bars jackpot in both 1993 and 1995.
The League brought together Europe’s highest-profile one-day meetings, including some that enjoy a long history (e.g. Bislett Games in Oslo, Welklasse Zürich and Memorial Van Damme in Brussels), and newer meetings further afield, to give the league a global reach. There are currently 15 meetings each season.
Paul Hession, who competed in the 200m at the London meeting in August 2010, was the first Irish athlete to compete in the League, with David Gillick and Derval O’Rourke also making appearances that season.
Over the years, Irish athletes have participated in all track events except the 100m. Deirdre Ryan, who competed in the high jump at the Shanghai meeting in 2012 and Tori Pena, who started in the Pole Vault in Doha in 2016, are, to date, the only Irish athletes to have competed in Diamond League field events.
In line with other data suggesting a golden era for Irish athletics, there is definitely an upward trend in the number of athletes and the total number of appearances at Diamond League events.
Nine athletes competed in the 2023 season (20 appearances between them), while there were 23 appearances from eight athletes in the 2024 season. Just two athletes made a single appearance each in both the 2013 and 2018 seasons.
Even with four fixtures remaining, the current season won’t reach the participation highs of the 2023 and 2024 seasons. That’s not to say it won’t have been a successful one for Irish athletes.
There are two Diamond League meetings this weekend, with the Lausanne meeting in Switzerland on Friday and the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial (Silesia Diamond League) in Poland on Sunday. Healy is the only Irish athlete currently due to compete at this weekend’s events, but that could change as athletes assess post-championship form and health.
Newly minted European 800m Champion Mark English disappeared from the Lausanne startlist on Monday afternoon, and European 1500m bronze medallist Andrew Coscoran at one point had Silesia pencilled into his schedule.
Both English and Coscoran are well placed to make the Ultimate Championships, and English could make the Diamond League final in Brussels, thanks to his maiden Diamond League win in Shanghai in May and his second place in London in July.
In addition to Mageean and English, two other Irish athletes (Adeleke, 400m, Monaco, July 2024 and Healy, 1500m, Rome 2025), have won Diamond League events. English is not without the tools to win Ireland’s first Diamond trophy should he make the startline in Brussels on 4th September.
