This World Athletics Relays event had a very broad schedule when it first started back in 2014, including distance relays. However, the last three events (2019,2024,2025) have been focused around being the qualifying event for that year's global championship.
The structure of this years event remains similar to the previous two: Day 1 heats will see the top 2 in each heat progress to a final on Day 2 (as well as the two fastest teams). The others go through to Day 2 qualify rounds.
The complication this year is that there are multiple qualifying possibilities on the line.
For Australia, we are looking at attempting to qualify for three different Championships, all with different permutations of relays they are hosting. It's a tough job for selectors once again, as they try to balance teams between competing priorities.
Commonwealth Games, Glasgow, 27 July - 1 August
The Commonwealth Games will host 4x100m relays for men & women, but only a mixed 4x400m relay. Australian Athletics has stipulated relay teams need to finish top 4 in the Commonwealth at World Relays to be selected.
In 2025, Australian women ranked 4th in the Commonwealth behind Great Britain, Jamaica & Canada, while the men were 5th behind Canada, South Africa, Ghana & Jamaica. The Australian 4x400m mixed relay team was ranked 4th behind Great Britain, Jamaica & South Africa.
It's not clear how the issue of Great Britain splitting into its constitute countries for the Commonwealth Games will be handled, presumably it will be considered as just one country for the purposes of qualification.
World Ultimate Championships, Budapest, 11-13 September
These Championships will host just the two mixed relay events. The top six teams in the Day 2 finals will qualify, and the next two will be taken from the 2026 toplist at the end of the qualification period (1st September). In 2025 Australia was ranked equal 7th in the mixed 4x100m relay, and 12th for the 4x400m mixed relay.
2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing
All the relays at Garborone will occur at thise Championships. Those teams who make the Day 2 final will qualify. Then the top four from the Day 2 qualify rounds based on times will also qualify. The last four spots to make up 16 qualifying nations, will be filled based on the top lists rankings in 2027.
The World U20 Championships in Eugene in August will also host all six relay events. However qualification is for the top ranked 24 countries in the world in 2026, and not affected by this World Relays event.
So given all that what do the selectors prioritise? The 4x400m events for men & women will only occur at the World Championships in 2027, so do they place the best 400m runners in the mixed event, and hope to gain one of the four remaining spots by 2027 on time? How to balance aiming for a top six 4x100 mixed relay spot for Ultimate Championships, versus quality mens & womens teams to finish top 4 Commonwealth?
Based on the Australian teams listed on the initial enty lists, there's a general balancing across all events. However these teams can be changed before Day 1, and also be shifted around for Day 2 based on the outcomes from the previous day.
This makes it an exciting event to watch and keep track off given the various possible qualification scenarios. TrackAthletes will be reporting on events as they happen.
